Inbound Student: Judit Kiss (Hungary)
Campbell River Daybreak Rotary is delighted to welcome Judit Kiss, a seventeen year old Hungarian student who is spending her year in Campbell River on Rotary exchange. Judit’s home city is Debrecen, Hungary, a city of 200 000 where she has lived with her parents and an older sister currently attending university. Judit loves to learn. She maintains impressive academic standards and enthusiastically challenges herself. In Hungary it is customary for her to take 15 courses during the school year in a day that usually begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. This year as a grade 12 student at Timberline she is taking senior science courses and focusing on further developing her English language skills. In Hungary she has already been enrolled in English for eight years which explains her impressive grasp of the English language.
At home in Hungary, Judit is a very active person with a passion for many sports. She enjoys dancing, skiing, jogging, and mountain climbing. She is also an avid reader with a keen interest in music and film. Judit loves Hungarian food and also enjoys a wide range of international dishes. While in Canada she hopes to develop a greater understanding of Canadian culture while at the same time helping others to learn more about her country. An active member of the Interact Club, Global Issues, and the Outdoors Club, she is eager to work in a role that supports others. She looks forward to the ski season as she is an avid skier when at home. Judit quickly became a part of the Daybreak Rotary Club as an enthusiastic Duck Race supporter
During the year, Judit will live with four different host families developing a sense of how different families spend their time. She is well on her way to establishing friendships with other Timberline students and other Rotary students on Vancouver Island! Judit readily volunteers her time and takes an active part in all Rotary activities. She is quickly becoming a valued member of the club as people grow to know her very positive and accepting nature. Daybreak Rotary is proud to have such a dedicated and open minded young ambassador of Hungary sharing her year with Campbell River.

Outbound Student: Paige McGowan (France)
Paige McGowan is one of those exuberant multi-talented students who seeks out opportunities to learn and grow. Her outstanding academic achievements and her true spirit of community service made her an ideal ambassador of the Daybreak Rotary Club. This year as a grade 11 student she is living in the community of Eu in Northern France. A French Immersion student since kindergarten, Paige is fortunate to have language skills and an appreciation of the French culture that has made her transition to a new country and exciting one. Her musical theatre talents which were showcased in last year’s Carihi production of Beauty and the Beast, have made her a natural when it comes to presentations for her host Rotary Club. While in France has spoken at several dinners, a graduation ceremony and most recently a fundraiser for Alzheimer research.
Paige wrote about her first visit to Paris, stating, “I can hardly believe how magical the city really is. I thought it was an exaggeration, but it really is magnificent.” Paige also shared the tremendous Canadian pride she felt when Canadian flags were raised on Remembrance Day in honour of the Canadian contributions during the war years. She recently visited the Canadian War Memorial at Dieppe. Paige was fortunate to spend a week with Rotary students from Normandy and Bretagne at Mont St. Michel, a beautiful abbey built during the middle ages. There have been many other highlights including the celebration of her Rotary Club’s 60th anniversary which involved "sister clubs" from Germany and England. She attended a Dali exhibition in a nearby town and attended a formal ball.
The Campbell River Daybreak Rotary Club is proud to know that Paige is making such a wonderful impression on her host families, the Rotary Club of Eu, and the many individuals who are playing a significant role in her cultural exchange this year. She moves to her second host family at the end of January. Paige will undoubtedly continue to have many remarkable experiences that will leave an imprint for life.
